    Engine and Cylinder Break-In

    • Follow the engine, cylinder, and aircraft manufacturers’ specific break-in instructions following an engine overhaul or cylinder replacement.
      • Do not substitute a generic break-in technique for the applicable manufacturer or overhauler instructions; following the specified procedure also protects warranty coverage.
      • Before the break-in flight, ensure that the mechanic has completed the required initial run, fuel-system setup or calibration, ignition checks, and leak inspections; minimize unnecessary ground running and prolonged idling.
      • Use only the oil and additives approved for the engine and break-in procedure, and document the oil quantity, oil consumption, engine-monitor data, operating conditions, and flight profiles throughout the process.
      • Conduct the break-in flight in conditions that provide adequate cooling and safe landing options, monitor oil pressure and cylinder-head temperatures closely, and remain within practical gliding distance of the airport or suitable terrain during the initial portion of the flight.
      • When consistent with the approved instructions, operate at the recommended high-power, rich-of-peak settings, vary power within the prescribed range, and avoid prolonged low-power operation or extended low-power descents until break-in is complete.
      • Lower and stabilized cylinder-head temperatures together with stabilized oil consumption may indicate that break-in has occurred, but completion should be determined using the applicable manufacturer or overhauler criteria.
